Pre-Op Instructions Prior to Cataract Surgery:

1. A physical exam from your Primary Care Physician is required prior to surgery. For patients over the age of 65, we also require an EKG. Please have the results sent to us at least one week prior to surgery! 

2. If you develop a cough, cold, flu-like symptoms, elevated blood sugar levels, red or sore eye, please call your surgeon!  Your surgery may be cancelled for any new illness or change in your health.

3. Consent forms will be signed prior to surgery. If you do not speak English, please bring a translator with you.

4. Please bring a complete list of your medications including vitamins and herbal supplements. In addition to the list, bring all of your medication bottles to the center (plastic bag works well).

5. We will notify you of your arrival time or van pick up time (if you plan on using the transportation service) a few days prior to your surgery. If you have not heard from us 2 days before your surgery, please call us at (978) 475-0959.

Patient Instructions Day of Surgery:

1. Please do not eat any food 7 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR SURGERY. You may consume a small amount of clear fluids (water, apple juice, Jello, pulp free orange juice, black coffee or tea) up to 2 hours before arrival.  No Dairy.  (Insulin dependent patients will be contacted the day before surgery concerning diet and insulin instructions).

2. Take all of your routine medications the morning of surgery. In particular, please take your diabetic, hypertensive and cardiac medications.

3. Dress comfortably.  A short sleeve shirt that buttons down the front is preferred.  You will NOT be asked to undress.  Please do not use perfume or cologne, as people may have allergies.

4. You may wear dentures, hearing aids and rings.  Please remove wrist watch and earrings.  Please do not wear any makeup.  A small locker is available for personal belongings.

5. Bring your picture ID and insurance cards.  Medicare patients may need to pay their co-payment if they have no secondary insurance.

6. Advance Directive such as “DNR” (Do Not Resuscitate) will NOT be honored.  Please inform us on admission if you have any Advance Directives.

7. Plan to be at the center for approximately three hours.  Your stay may be longer due to unforeseen events. Please arrange to have a responsible adult take you home.

8. Bring a pair of sunglasses.
